Anay R. Patel, M.DOrthopedic Surgeon

Dr. Anay R.Patel, MD is a board-certified, fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon who specializes in hip and knee replacement . He provides expert care to his patients by using the latest advanced treatments and minimally invasive techniques to speed recovery and return patients to their active lifestyles.

Dr. Patel was born and raised in Columbus, Ohio. His father, a respected cardiologist, was his main source of inspiration to work hard and pursue a career in the service of others. Dr. Patel graduated from Duke University in 2005 and then graduated Cum Laude from The Ohio State University College of Medicine in 2009. While at Ohio State he was awarded numerous scholarships and awards including being inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society for academic Achievement. Dr. Patel then completed his residency at Northwestern University in Chicago, IL. It was there that Dr. Patel worked with pioneers of joint replacement such as S. David Stulberg and fostered an interest in joint replacement. Dr. Patel then completed a fellowship in hip and reconstruction and joint replacement at the prestigious Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City. While there Dr. Patel learned the most modern and cutting-edge techniques in joint replacement including robotic surgery, computer navigation, and rapid recovery protocols for hip and knee replacement.

Dr. Patel joint Texas Orthopedic Hospital and Fondren Orthopedic Group in 2015. He continues to contribute to the medical literature on the treatments and complications of hip and knee replacements. He is currently a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons. He instructs trainees and fellow surgeons at Texas Orthopedic Hospital and at a variety of courses throughout the country.

Dr. Patel welcomes patients with hip and knee pain at The Fondren Orthopedic Group and Texas Orthopedic Hospital, located in the heart of Houston just south of the Texas Medical Center. He also welcomes patients who have complex issues such as infections, loose implants, or prior joint replacements that have had disappointing results. His objective is to provide patients with a comfortable environment in which to discuss their hip and knee issues. Dr. Patel hopes to provide personalized care to his patients so they can understand their problems, consider their options, and then work together to pick the right solution.

Philosophy

Listen to My Patients – One of the biggest disappointments a patient can have is not feeling heard by their doctor. I feel that open and honest communication is the most important step to achieving an excellent outcome for my patients. I try very hard to listen to my patients, focusing not only on their pain and discomfort, but also what impact that has on their day to day life. By listening to patients I can get a better idea of what is important to my patients. That allows me to set realistic expectations for my patients so we can achieve our goals as a team.

Inform My Patient – In the past, patients went to the doctor to be told what to do to make themselves better. The doctor often made the decision for the patient. I do not believe that is the best course of action. Patient’s need to understand their problem and understand their options for treatment. While too much information can be overwhelming, too little can leave a patient unclear on what is happening to them. I try to find a balance of the appropriate amount of information for each patient, allowing them to understand their disease without becoming overwhelmed by it. Once a patient understands what is happening we can then work together to come up with an appropriate treatment plan. By involving the patient deeply in the decision-making, the patient is empowered and informed, a recipe for success.

Support My Patients – Complications can happen in any surgery. I often treat patients with complex issues such as infected artificial joints or poor results from a prior surgery. Listening to these patients has shown me that above all, these patients are disappointed and at times saddened by their poor outcome. It is in those moments I find it crucial to let the patient know honestly where things stand and what the chances of are improving them. By being honest and supportive I believe my patients can gain some confidence in their situation which allows them to feel like they are controlling their disease, rather than letting their disease control them.
